How high should a dog feeding station be? ›

Depending on how big your dog is, the appropriate height of an elevated feeder will range from a few inches to a foot or more. Usually, it is recommended that an elevated feeder be the same height as your dog's lower chest.

How high should the bowls be for dogs? To determine the proper height of an elevated feeding station for your dog, subtract 6″ from the withers. With your dog standing, measure up to the shoulder and subtract 6 inches.

The 95% Rule

At least 95% of the product must be the named ingredient, for example, “Chicken for Dogs,” or “Salmon Dog Food,” must include at least 95% of chicken or salmon, respectively. In addition, this main product must be at least 70% of the total product when counting the added water.

Pets with neck or shoulder pain, herniated cervical discs, arthritis of the spine, or other diseases of the head or neck may benefit from elevated dishes. The elevated platform keeps the pet's head and neck up, eliminating strain on the neck that would be caused by reaching down to a bowl on the floor.

The 10% rule means your dog's treats per day allowance should take up no more than 10% of their daily calorie intake. To work this out, it's useful to know the number of calories you should be feeding your dog per day. These can be provided by your pet food's manufacturer or found on the back of all dog food packaging.

The number of meals a dog eats per day depends completely on the family schedule. Dogs should eat at least two meals each day, about 12 hours apart. But a breakfast, lunch, and dinner schedule is an equally great option. If more than 12 hours elapses between meals, the stomach can become hyperacidic causing nausea.

They have to bend down quite a bit, right? This isn't always the most comfortable position, especially for our older dogs or large-breed dogs who might have joint issues. An elevated food bowl allows your dog to maintain a better posture while eating, which can contribute to their overall comfort and health.

Dogs can be very messy eaters, spilling food all around the floor and even on the walls, so make sure there's nothing near your dog's eating area that can be damaged. We recommend putting his food bowl near his water bowl, which should always be there, cleaned often and filled with fresh water.

Having your dog's bowl higher off the ground puts less strain on your dog's neck. So if your dog is older or struggles with joint or bone issues, elevated bowls are a great way to make them comfortable when they eat. If you have a large or giant breed dog, elevated bowls aren't going to be the best fit.

Shallow bowls are most common, and are great for small dogs and most medium dogs. Short breeds and other small dogs can comfortably eat from shallow bowls without having to deal with any pressure on their necks.

Prevents joint pain and discomfort

For large and medium dogs, straining down to floor level can be uncomfortable and even harmful. Serving food in a raised dog bowl for large dogs means your pooch won't have to bend down excessively to eat and drink. As a result, raised dishes may be the best dog bowls for large dogs.

As a general rule, measure your dog from the floor to where their legs meet their body and don't get a raised bowl or feeder that is taller than that.

At one time, elevated dog bowls were thought to help prevent bloat in dogs. Recent research has found that this is not true—in fact, an elevated bowl could increase the risk of bloat. Unless your veterinarian specifically recommends an elevated feeding bowl, it's best not to use one.
