Funeral Sandwiches are delicious ham and cheese sliders you can make as an easy appetizer recipe or as a family friendly meal.Full of warm salty ham, nutty Swiss cheese and topped with a tangy Dijon butter sauce, these mini slider sandwiches are nothing to be sad about!

In fact, they're one of my go-to meals during harvest and planting seasons.

Why are they called funeral sandwiches?

These delicious ham and cheese sliders can be made as an easy appetizer recipe or as a family friendly meal.

So why does something so delicious have a name like funeral sandwiches? Good question, but if you’ve ever made funeral potatoes, you’re already nodding your head along with me.

Funeral sandwiches with Dijon mustard are notorious for being served at church gatherings. They're a southern tradition, too, I'm told!

Why? Because they’re such a crowd pleasing recipe and are easy to make. It goes without saying that in addition to all celebrations, they’ve made their way into the funeral luncheon circuit too.

It doesn’t seem to happen as much these days, but “back in the day” my Grandma and Mom would prepare potluck dishes for our church funerals. After the church ceremony, everyone would head over to the church basem*nt for a luncheon.

More often than not, funeral sandwiches would be at such luncheons at churches, particularly in the south. Serve 'em up with a side of old fashioned baked beans and you're sitting pretty!

Funeral Sandwich Ingredients

Funeral Sandwiches are made with super simple ingredients, like standard Hawaiian rolls. Rolls are toped with nutty Swiss cheese, salty ham and a tangy dijon butter mixture is poured over the top.

Then, they bake into mini-sandwiches of deliciousness.

The bottom soaks up some of the butter sauce. The middle is warm and melty, and the top half is seasoned just right. Delicious!

This recipe (and pretty much every slider recipe EVER!) is one of my top recommendations for field meals or for meal ideas for families on the go.

And if warm isn't an option, you can always check out my cold lunch ideas and tractor meals!
